Problem: Spark 8 controller stuck on “in communication” when activating valves

Stefano
Updated at 2025-07-21 21:17:23 UTC

Hi everyone,

my Netro Spark 8 controller connects correctly to Wi-Fi and shows as online in the app. However, when I try to start irrigation manually from the app, it just stays on “in communication” and nothing happens.

I’ve already tried:

  • Using a different Wi-Fi network (even a mobile hotspot)
  • Replacing the controller with a new Spark 8
  • Restarting both the app and the device

If I activate the valves directly from the controller, they work fine — so it’s not a hardware issue.

Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Thanks in advance!

– Stefano

Can you change the order of zones in a current program without having to create a new program?

Why can’t I change my zone off whipsper

My whisper smart sensor is contacted to my garden plants zone at my holiday home. The smart schedule is not working.this is due to the fact that the sensor battery says it needs charging. Obviously I can’t charge it as I am not there. But I can’t seem to find a way of disconnecting the sensor from the program and on to smart schedule

Issue with Netro Spark

Hello,

Since a few days my Netro is not receiving data from the different Whisperers connected and all of them are well connected to Wi Fi and charged. I am not able to run manual watering, only the planned ones go. It looks like there is an issue or with my Netro Spark or with the Netro Server. I am based in Italy. Please let me know. Thank you.

Spark not working – won’t start valves despite all attempts

Updated at 2025-07-23 06:55:23 UTC

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using a Netro Spark (8-zone model) for some time, but recently it stopped working properly.

The controller connects to Wi-Fi and appears online in the app, but when I try to start any valve (manually or via schedule), it says “communicating” and nothing happens.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Restarted the Spark multiple times
  • Performed a full reset (12 seconds on RST button)
  • Re-added the device in the app
  • Tried to trigger irrigation manually from both the app and the controller
  • Confirmed that the system works when I open the valves manually from the controller
  • Tried different power supplies
  • Connected to a mobile hotspot instead of my home Wi-Fi (same result)
  • Updated the firmware to the latest version (v3.3.0)
  • Purchased a brand new Spark controller and tested it — same exact issue

At this point, it looks like the issue is not hardware or network-related.

Could it be a firmware bug or a server-side problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Stefano Mauri

Watering time

I added the Netro whisperer 2 soil sensor to my ficus pot. The sensor gives me contradictory messages. It says that next watering should be in one week but every night it sends a notification to 'water the ficus sensor's. What should I do?

Interpretation of soil moisture readings by Whisperer

I have two Whisperers that I move around to various parts of my graden to get comparative readings of sunlight and soil moisture.  I really do not know how to interpret the moisture readings which generally range from 50% to 98% but can be as low as 30%.  Soil type varies from a clayey loam to heavy clay.   How do I know when watering is required?  Does the meter measure the capillary water?  The adhered water?  The percentage of voids filled with water?  How does Netro calculate the percentage of water and what do the readings mean?

App reports off-line, controller is on-line and web based app is on-line

Hello,

I have a strange situation:

- App reports controller as off-line, sometimes it reports on-line for brief periods. It was working fine till three days ago

- Controller has green light

- Web app on the netro site reports on-line and works

- The controller is watering

- The Wifi near the controller is working and I have not changed the password or settings

- I have tried forcing it to change the wifi, I get the bluetooth light and the controller is detected on the app via bluetooth, however it fails after I insert the password for the wifi. This is odd since the device is connected.

I suspect there is a synch issue between the App and your servers. Help would be appreciated.

Scheduled programs not completed

I have some scheduled zones using programs and I'm seeing that the zones later in the program are being cancelled and not completing the scheduled program. What is causing the schedule to be overridden? It's a problem because those zones that are being skipped are not being watered at all.

Problem: Spark 8 controller stuck on "in communication"

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a serious issue with my Netro Spark 8 controller. It connects correctly to Wi-Fi and appears online in the app, but when I try to start irrigation manually, the app just stays on "in communication" and nothing happens.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

- Restarting both the app and the device
- Using a different Wi-Fi network, including a mobile hotspot

Despite these attempts, the problem persists. I also tested the solenoids with a multimeter, and they’re working correctly. If I activate the valves directly from the controller, they respond as expected—so it’s clearly not a hardware issue.

I should also mention that I previously had the same problem with two Sprite6 controllers. That’s why I switched to the Spark 8, hoping it would solve the issue. Unfortunately, it hasn’t.

To make matters worse, scheduled programs aren’t working either.

This is an urgent situation because my plants are currently without water. I’d really appreciate any help or suggestions to resolve this.

Thanks in advance,
Stefano

Soil type?

The app has a number of soil choices- I don’t know which to choose. I assume different soil has different water retention. Is there a list which shows how much water the different soil types require?  Or is there a way to tell which soil you have?

Two locations

I have a system working in Florida and I just wanted to do the same thing in Kansas and I bought it and I have wired it but I haven't plugged it in because I don't know how I'm going to control each different location and I'm afraid something might go wrong and I won't be able to water in Florida.

So how do I control each separate location with the same phone?

Scheduling

Richard Hall
Updated at 2018-07-09 15:56:46 UTC

i’ve had the controller installed for almost 2months now and it works fine. I like the idea that it seems to know how much to water and keep the lawn  green. However I have pets who use the backyard and would like the watering to be between 9 pm and 5 am.  I think the system can be setup for manual watering times BUT that defeats getting an expensive smart system to replace a low end rainbird system.

Is there anyway to set up time constraints on the system and still run on automatic,

Also lack of a manual and good instruction is a pain.

Smart zone watering some zones multiple times

Jason Warren
Updated at 2018-07-10 11:29:26 UTC

I have eight zones with smart watering enabled for all zones. I noticed this morning when looking at scheduling that a few of the zones will water multiple times in the same morning. For example, Zone one will water for 4 minutes, Zone 2, Zone 3 excetera. Then it goes back to Zone 1 for 3 minutes, and maybe zone for for 7 minutes. Is this normal?

I have inserted a screen shot.Notice the zone, "house left."
